Name: Eirin Molle
Position: Systems Consultant
Worked at Orange Business since: July 2019
Based: Oslo, Norway
Can you tell us about how you first came in contact with Orange Business?
I got in contact with Orange Business (then Basefarm) when I was doing my bachelor’s degree at OsloMET where I studied Data Engineering. I was initially referred by a person whom I already knew who worked here and who gave my resume to the Operation Center. We then had a couple of interviews and I then started here right after I graduated.
How would you describe what the Service Delivery department (part of the Platform & Managed Services area of expertise) you belong to does?
To simplify it, I would say that we are the ones whose job is to know the customers really well and working directly together with them. We are their main team for the operations and development of their platforms. Then we of course have the Operation Center who support to handle events, changes and the 24/7 support.
Tell us a bit about your work as Systems Consultant and how you work?
I have previously worked with several customers split between both on-prem and AWS customers. However, today I only work with one of our big AWS customers for whom I am also the Technical Account Manager for the AWS part. What I do for this customer vary a lot depending on whether we have any ongoing projects at the time or not. Right now, we for example have an ongoing project that we started a couple of weeks ago and then it is of course constantly other changes or events etc that needs to be taken care of at the same time. So, my work varies a lot and what the focus is depends on what projects we have going, the projects can take a couple of days to several weeks.
What do you enjoy the most about your position?
What I enjoy the most is actually the reason behind why I first applied for a position within Service Delivery, and it is the customer contact. I wanted to have more contact with the customer than I had when working in Operation Center where you never get to know the customers properly but more on a general level. My favorite part is to get to build the relationship with the customers which results in good communication and collaboration.
Was it a given for you that you wanted to work with AWS?
I was not set on what type of technology I wanted to specialize and work with initially. I talked to the Talent Acquisition team and mentioned that I was interested in working closer to the customers. I mentioned that I wanted to specialize a bit more but that I did not really know in what, however I had taken a general certification in AWS and was interested in learning more about it. So it was through several conversations I later moved to Service Delivery with the plan to work with a specific customer which is a big AWS customer.
What education and background do you have to be able to do this job?
As mentioned earlier, I have a university degree which helped me get the job in Operation Center. Other than that, it is what I learned there which has helped me get to the position I have today. Operation Center is great as you get to be involved in so many different tasks and work with all the customers. It helps you gather an understanding and more of an opinion on what technologies you have an interest in and maybe if there is a specific customer you would like to work closer with. So going through Operation Center is the best way to learn the company and you get to talk to everyone who works here and get to know people.
It is apparent that you have had a career journey here at Orange Business, do you feel that you have been given the support you have wanted to develop yourself in the right direction?
Yes absolutely! I have had good communication with my managers both when I moved to Service Delivery and before that when I was in Operation Center. Since my move to Service Delivery, I have, together with my manager worked through if I wanted to work with on-prem solutions or AWS. In Operation Center I also got the opportunity to be on the Problem team and take on the role as Problem Team Lead to take on a bit more responsibility. Other than the communication with my managers I also had support from the Talent Acquisition Department in discussing different opportunities based on my interests.
What do you personally think is the best thing about working at Orange Business, the Digital Service business line in Oslo?
I enjoy the collaboration we have across teams and the knowledge sharing culture, we are good at discussing and supporting each other when someone might be struggling. There is always someone who will lend a hand and help which is something I enjoy a lot. This is one of the reasons I enjoy working in an open office landscape like we have at our new office, it makes it easier to sit with people who are not part of your department. I tend to sit a lot with people from other Service Delivery teams or from the Public cloud department who also work with AWS customers when they are at the office as that has been a great way to talk to, get to know and easier share knowledge and support with each other.
