Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you first came into contact with Orange Business?
I knew of Orange from before when living in Austria, primarily as a telecommunications provider, and I have always had a positive perception of the company. Later, when I was considering moving from Austria to Switzerland, I worked with a recruiter to find suitable position and that is when Orange Business came into the picture. From my very first interactions, especially after meeting my future manager, I had a great feeling about the company. It felt like a perfect fit, and I am very happy that I made the move to Zurich and began my career at Orange Business.
What was it that impacted your decision to join Orange Business? Initially, it was my positive perception of Orange Business as a company and brand that made me open to the opportunity to engage and see if it was the right fit for me. But the real deciding factor was the people I met during the interview process. Everyone I interacted with left a strong impression, and overall, it was a very positive experience that convinced me this was the right place for me.
How has your experience joining Orange Business been so far?
I have to say I am very happy with my experience, it has actually exceeded my expectations! It has been something of an adventure, especially since it also involved moving to a new country. When I was interviewed, it was at our old office, so I did not know exactly what I was walking into. But this is honestly the best job I have had so far, and a big part of that is the amazing people I work with. They are professional, smart, and genuinely nice!
What do you do in your position as a Business Intelligence & Data Consultant? What tasks, projects, technologies do you work with? How much does this differ depending on different projects?
As a Business Intelligence and Data Consultant in the Data & AI Business unit at Orange Business, the Digital Services business line in Zurich, we provide IT consultancy services mainly to companies across the DACH region. Our primary goal is to help organizations make data-driven decisions. We achieve this by integrating, managing, and modelling data to deliver the right information to the right people.
In my role, I design Business Intelligence architectures and ETL processes, how data moves from point A to point B, and create dashboards. I also work closely with the sales team to provide technical pre-sales support and conduct proof-of-concept workshops. As we operate across various industries, the work is diverse, dynamic and filled with new challenges, which I find very appealing.
Can you tell us about the most recent project you worked on?
I recently completed a proof-of-concept workshop with a new client in the logistics and manufacturing sector. The goal was to create a dashboard that categorizes warehouse movements to provide better insight. We used SAP data as the source for building the dashboard. The results were very well received by the client’s management and the next steps will involve expanding the dashboard and ETL process, as well as enhancing the data model to include automatic alerting and automated reporting to further strengthen the BI architecture.
What do you enjoy the most about the work here at Orange Business?
I would say there are two main things. First, the people! I work with incredible colleagues, and I really value the leadership here. I believe it is important to recognize good leadership as it can wither make or break your day. At Orange Business, I appreciate that everyone is encouraged to voice their opinions, which is not always the case in other workplaces.
Second, I truly value the personal freedom we are given in our roles. I have the flexibility to manage my own schedule and working hours, of course around our core working hours, and I feel trusted to deliver on my responsibilities without anyone constantly looking over my shoulder.
What education and background do you have before joining Orange Business?
I completed a bachelor's degree in Business Informatics in Austria, which is an interdisciplinary degree that combines computer science and business. It had a strong focus on data engineering, data modelling, software engineering, and communications technology. That, along with a foundational understanding of business, gave me a solid starting point.
Currently, I am also pursuing a masters degree in Data Management and Business Analytics at EDHEC Business School. In addition to my studies, I have completed various certifications, including in e.g. Qlik, to deepen my expertise.
Other than what you have already mentioned, are there any additional things you enjoy the most about working at Orange Business in Zurich?
I would also like to add that I highly appreciate how well we are cared for and all the efforts the company makes to create a positive environment. Our office space is fantastic, it is a great place to work, and I genuinely enjoy the opportunities we have to connect with colleagues, like the weekly brunch offered at the office is one of those small things that makes a big difference.
